Healthy Joints: Keeping Your Pet Moving Comfortably Through Life

Joints work hard for our pets. Every game of fetch, every leap onto the sofa, every stroll along Olenguruone Avenue depends on cartilage cushioning bone against bone. Over time that cartilage wears, and osteoarthritis becomes one of the most common conditions we diagnose in both dogs and cats, particularly in senior animals and breeds predisposed to hip or elbow problems such as Labradors, German Shepherds and Maine Coons.

The difficulty with joint disease is that pets rarely cry out. Dogs slow down gradually: hesitation at the car door, stiffness rising in the morning, a walk that ends earlier than it used to. Cats hide even better, simply stopping to jump onto favourite high spots or grooming less over stiff hips. Weight gain often follows reduced activity, which loads painful joints further, creating a downward spiral many owners mistake for normal ageing. Ageing explains grey muzzles; it should not explain limping.

Diagnosis starts with history and orthopaedic examination, supported by X-rays to assess joint spaces and bone changes. From there, management is multi-layered. Keeping your pet lean is the single most effective intervention we can recommend; even modest weight reduction measurably improves mobility. Controlled low-impact exercise such as leash walks and swimming maintains muscle mass that supports joints. Veterinary-prescribed pain relief and joint-supporting nutraceuticals make a genuine difference for moderate to severe cases, and newer monoclonal antibody injections have changed comfort levels for many arthritic dogs and cats.

Start protecting joints young. Feed large-breed puppies appropriately balanced diets, avoid forced high-impact exercise while growth plates are open, and schedule regular check-ups so subtle gait changes are caught early. If your dog hesitates at stairs or your cat has stopped joining you on the bed, book an examination. Comfort in old age is built on the care you invest now, and we will build a plan suited to your pet's joints, weight and lifestyle.
