What Is a Rabies Titre Test?

A rabies titre test is a blood test that measures the level of rabies virus-neutralising antibodies in your pet's blood following vaccination.

The test does not simply confirm that your pet received a rabies vaccine. It determines whether the vaccination produced an adequate antibody response.

The result is reported in International Units per millilitre (IU/mL).

For international pet travel, the commonly accepted minimum is:

0.5 IU/mL

A result of 0.5 IU/mL or higher is considered a satisfactory rabies antibody response for destinations that require a rabies titre test.

Understanding Your Rabies Titre Test Result

The result on your pet's laboratory report is expressed in IU/mL.

0.5 IU/mL or higher — Satisfactory Result

A result of 0.5 IU/mL or higher meets the commonly required minimum for destinations that use the 0.5 IU/mL threshold. This confirms that your pet has achieved the required rabies antibody level.

Although 0.5 IU/mL is the minimum accepted threshold, a result comfortably above 0.5 IU/mL provides additional reassurance that your pet has developed an adequate antibody response.

There is generally no requirement to achieve a particular level above 0.5 IU/mL. A result of 0.6 IU/mL, for example, meets the same minimum threshold as a result of 5.0 IU/mL where the destination requires ≥0.5 IU/mL.

Below 0.5 IU/mL — Unsatisfactory Result

A result below 0.5 IU/mL does not meet the minimum antibody requirement for destinations that use the 0.5 IU/mL threshold.

In such cases, your veterinarian may recommend a rabies booster vaccination followed by repeat titre testing after the appropriate interval. The specific timing depends on your pet's vaccination history and the requirements of the destination country.

A result below 0.5 IU/mL does not necessarily mean that the vaccine was ineffective. It means that the antibody level measured in the blood sample did not reach the threshold required for the intended international movement.

Why Is a Rabies Titre Test Important for Pet Travel?

Rabies is a serious and potentially fatal zoonotic disease. Because countries have different levels of rabies risk, some destinations require evidence that an imported pet has developed an adequate immune response to rabies vaccination.
